5 ways you are getting it right TODAY

Last week I wrote about having a "To-Done List", and many of you reached out and connected with me on this topic. It reminded me of something I had written and posted on Linkedin awhile ago, and I used these words in my discussions with you.

It's so easy to focus on what isn't working, what we are not doing, what has been left for another day. Sometimes we ignore the things we are getting right, and that we are mostly awesome.

It's like when I am illogically haunted by the one bad thing someone said {about my blog} and I forget all the awesome things people have shared with me. Why do we focus on the negative?

Well, not today. Today we are celebrating five ways that we are turning (or contemplating turning) lemons into lemonade.

You made it to work with coffee (or lemons) in hand

Sometimes it's the small things that make us smile. I know that coffee {or insert your morning beverage of choice} gives us a jolt of happiness and warmth. That spreads to others. So you basically just smiled at someone and then made them smile. Your coffee is the gift that keeps on giving. Go ahead, get another cup.

You are reading this

I took a moment to reflect on the good through this post...and now I am feeling good about that. And, in turn, you are reflecting on the things you are getting right and this is one of them. You took a moment to read something that invests in your personal growth. Way to go. Keep going.

You are curious

You just clicked on an article from a person you might not know very well. You were curious, and curiosity is an excellent leadership quality. Do you think a great leader has all the answers? Never. They get curious. They ask questions. They learn about new people. They dig deeper.

You showed up

When my brother was graduating college I gave him this advice, "You think you are entering a work force of adults that show up on time, do what they say they are going to do, and operate with integrity. That's not always true. The guy in your English class that rarely showed up gets a job too. Sometimes you have to work with him.

Do the expected and you will be fine. Do the expected and more and you will find meaningful success." I didn't realize what I was saying at the time, but my own words have stuck with me. It's like the saying "Go the extra mile. It's never crowded." Pat yourself on the back. You showed up today. You are here and that means there is more to come.

You have potential

In the negativity spiral of all we haven't accomplished there is a silver lining: you have potential. You know that there is opportunity in the minutes that follow your frustrations. Sometimes it's easy to get lost in the shuffle and in those moments I ask myself what are three things that went well today. It's amazing what that does for my outlook {and potential}.

I know there are more things you are getting right today. Don't forget the awesome things you do accomplish. Even if it's as simple as getting dressed and out the door on time. Some of us struggle with that!
